With Independence, Valparaíso is more open to world trade as a strategic enclave in the Atlantic / Pacific inter-oceanic exchanges that pass through Cape Horn. The city preserves from this time a splendid architectural heritage. As a result of this economic and financial dynamism, until the first third of the 20th century the city was a pioneer in all the urban progress of the country: public lighting, trams, gas, telephone and telegraph connections. Observing the sea and going up the first buttresses of the Andes, the city lives today between the glory of a past and the actuality of a port to the increasing activity under the effect of the strong economic dynamism of the country and its proximity to the capital.
